i see the victimization crush is on, again. dyb001 has proferred the usual
grad-school jive about a theoretical matriarchate (I can only suppose) in
which domination was not a constant. hasn't anybody read Frazer?
sympathetic magic is no antithesis of big, bad Science--it's its precursor.
The happy-hunting grounds were never free of domination; in fact, the belief
that ' at one time' societies existed which were spared the curse of
rationalization, was probably the rationalization for the continued existence
of those societies in their own time. the taboos indicate as much. the only
thing pre-historic societies have going for them is that, compared with later
developments, their stupidity is exemplary: they are more consistently
stupid than we are consistently smart. whereas their taboos merely preserved
injustice as a mythic legacy, our taboos obliterate the concept of justice
altogether.

as for the matriarchal role in all of this, i've always considered the
imbecilic feminine myth of renewal as the core institituion of . . . the
patriarchy. History was created with Woman at the center, as the Zero--so
that, ashes to ashes, nothing would ever change.

As I'm fond of telling my five-year-old niece: if women ran the show, there
would still be wars; only, there would be different weapons. Huge,
pussy-shaped suction devices that swallow armies whole; hideous chemical
sprays; massive, life-sucking blow-dryers; blinding nail-polish rain . . .
