  GR & art history "mavens" would be well advised to look at
the works of Otto Dix, a German painter who lived from (I may
have this a bit off) 1897 to 1969. He was in the trenches in
WWI on several fronts, was proounced "decadent" by the National
Socialists and turned to landscapes, obtuse allegories & self-
portraiture while living in seclusion, he was "drafted" into the Volksturm
(Homeguard) during the latter days of WWII and was captured, serving
time as a POW.
  His work needs to be seen.
