Oy oy, of course it's Ireland. Thanks for the correction, Paul. But isn't Deasy English?
The English guy was is the first chapter--Haines by name. Just got my
book out to check. Another set of yellowed, falling-out pages. Deasy appears to be quite Irish. Rants a bit about England being in the hands of the Jews. Then at the end of the chapter springs the Irish solution on poor politely-listening but long-suffering Stephen. God, what a writer Joyce is!
I say this about Ulysses finding little or no pleasure in READING the Wake. Do listen to the 17-CD recorded set of the Wake. Letting the sound bathe over one is very pleasurable and quite meaningful too in its own way. Couldn't resist this chance at a little plug for another favorite author.
