     The Council on International Educational Exchange (Council) seeks 
     applications for the position of Resident  Director for Council's 
     Critical Studies Program in Paris, France for the 1997-8 academic 
     year.
     
     The Critical Studies Program, begun in 1973, is unique among study 
     abroad programs for American students in Paris. The program, located 
     at the Paris Center for Critical Studies at Place de l'Odeon, offers 
     courses in the contemporary culture of film, literature, philosophy 
     and criticism and draws faculty from the French intellectual scene. 
     The program's primary institutional affiliation is the with the 
     University of Paris III (La Sorbonne-Nouvelle). Program students 
     enroll in a combination of special program courses and regular 
     university courses. All courses are taught in French.
     
     The Resident Director (RD) acts as the on-site supervisor of the 
     program, with primary responsibility for ensuring that the courses are 
     of the highest academic quality. In addition, the RD will work with 
     Council staff in New York to develop new program and service options 
     including a French language and culture program with content courses 
     taught in English, a graduate research track, internships and 
     logistical support activities. The RD supervises one full-time 
     administrator. While helping students adjust to the study abroad 
     environment, the RD acts as liaison between students and French 
     faculty as well as between French administrators and Council staff in 
     New York.
     
     Preference will be given to those with the following qualifications:
     
     1) Proficiency in the French language. 
     2) Previous group leadership experience. 
     3) Prior residence in Paris.
     4) Candidates with at least an M.A., Ph.D's or Doctoral Candidates 
     preferred. Concentration in French cultural studies, Literature, 
     Literary Theory, Film, Theater preferred. Previous teaching experience 
     also preferred.
     5) Excellent administrative experience and organizational skills 
     including computer knowledge of Windows '95 and Microsoft Office. 
     6) Candidates available for at least a one-year appointment.
