Yes, it is a very complex little essay.  My initial reading was too
simplistic, I fear.  I really thought he was, if not embracing the
technology, then sort of accepting it as inevitable (after all, what
have we imagined/created and not used -- the "If we survive" bit), but
offering some hope of that technology changing the social order, sort of
a go-ahead, let that genie out of the bottle, yeah, throw us in that
briar patch...  Ah yes, it is cold and minimally comforting, for sure.

Re: old manual Royals, I used a 30's vintage Underwood in college.  It
would definitely build some finger muscles, but on the plus side
encouraged you to get it right the first time and avoid that
over-editing and endless revisions that word processors can provoke.
