Absolutely, and thanks for pulling the citations together. I was
thinking of this during the discussion of the "seventh Christmas of the
War." That might or might not have been a slip, might or might not have
been a significant red herring.
But Bianca's real chronological age is as carefully nailed down as the
fact that the incest-Ilse can't be Franz's daughter. The two
encounters illuminate each other brilliantly. Pokler just doesn't have
as much talent as Slothrop for thinking he's getting what he thinks he
wants.
Sometimes I picture Pynchon at work in a big barn, the walls covered
with a million notes on 3x5 cards, arrows and strings keeping all the
connections straight, which scares me.
Then I picture him holding it all in his head, which *really* scares me.
