If I recall correctly from one of the Feynman books I read ("Surely You're
Joking" or the other book of anecdotes), there's even a bit of rivalry
existent between mathematicians and scientists.  I think Feynman said
something to the effect that the mathematicans all had their heads buried
in hyper-complicated equations and often didn't see simpler solutions to
problems.
