I too love that line, although I believe it is
delivered by Mephistopheles, not Faust. But then the Devil always gets
the best gags. In particular I suspect that the young buck's notion of
`algebra' as practised by a `fearful Jesuit' is somewhat wider and
more all-embracing than that of yer average mathematician. More
Spinoza than Galois but with a dash of sophistry to taste.
