Have not seen "Breaking the Waves" yet, but I too was struck by the
Zone-like setting of "Zentropa", as well as the "werewolves" and the
drowning of the Slothrop-like protagonist; also, Von Trier's "The Kingdom"
also seems very Pychonesque, with it's "White Visitation" style imagery,
the black marketeer living in the supply room, the bizzare spirituality,
etc etc. Thinking about it, if anyone could capture the seesnce of a
Pynchon novel on film, I would have to nominate Von Trier.
Or maybe I'm just paranoid, too.
