R.A. Lafferty is a hilarious writer of tall tales and myths who
is, unfortunately, fairly unknown outside the confines of Genre SF(and is
pretty obscure even within the genre). I would compare him to Pynchon in
his linguistic gusto, though he is lighter in tone. Though he's
written some good novels, its in the short stories where he truly shines.
Two collections that immediately come to mind are 900 Grandmothers and
Ringing Changes(especially the story "Sky"). Check 'em out...
