And in the same vein as "Flatland", there's "Planiverse" by A.K. Dewdney,
the guy who used to (still does?) the mathematical diversions column for
Scientific American.

It really is an enjoyable read and he damned near had me believing (or at
least wanting to believe) that he'd discovered sentient beings in his
computer monitor.
