"Catch-22" was really funny when it came out. It absolutely captured the
essence of what we were going through and somehow made it liveable, as well
as being one of the best novels to come out of World War II. I can see where
it would be much less poignant in another time. Heller's real masterpiece
was "Something Happened," which was such a bitterly faithful rendering of
the media world of the late 50s and early 60s that reviewers gagged in
disgust. It was their own nightmare that he drew in cold acid. I don't
remember a single laugh, just endless wincing mirrored hells of psychic pain.
