Here's what the OED has to say [bits omitted]:

Malay kechap (in Dutch spelling ketjap), which has been claimed as the
original source, may be from Chinese.  

First documented usage: 1711, Lockyer's _Acc. Trade India_
Soy comes in Tubbs from Japan, and the best Ketchup from Tonquin; yet good
of both sorts are made and sold very cheap in China.
