The OED 1711 entry points the way: it turns out that ketjap [pronounced
ketchup, of course] is an Indonesian variant of soy sauce. Intensely dark
brown and syrupy-thick, sweetened with palm sugar or molasses, it also
features garlic, star-anise and/or cilantro among its basic ingredients. No
tomatoes. Mentioned in the Epicurious Dictionary; lots of recipes on the
Internet; the Hotbot search engine has it on 230 URLs [!], quite a few of
them in either Durch or Malay.
