M&D pp.70-71 -- the Sepoi

I was told a few weeks ago that the Sepoi story has been debunked [my friend
couldn't find his source for this bit of info].  I.e. it seems that the
reports about the Sepoi and their dream-lore made early in this century were
essentially a figment of someone's ethnographic imagination.  Or a joke the
Sepoi played on European anthropologists.  Does anyone on the list know
something more about this?
