There was a book out last summer by a writer from one of the Philadelphia
papers, called either "The Complete Package" or "The Total Package" that had
a quick discussion on the development of commercial advertising in the US,
specifically as it relates to the development of package design [did you
know that the first can opener wasn't invented until 20 or 30 years after
the introduction of the tin can? Hmmm.]

Obviously, the material on advertising wasn't complete, being somewhat
peripheral & all, but I think the book had a bibliography...
