You may have heard "patois" used to refer to the "French-based language
spoken in various parts of the Caribbean", but you probably didn't hear it
from a Creole speaker.  They correctly refer to it as a language, which has
several dialects (Haiti, Guadeloupe, Reunion, etc.).  It is not
comprehensible to a French speaker. "An ka kompwann tibiten kreyol" ("I can
understand a little Guadeloupian Creole")
