Actually, I found the Slate review refreshing. I don't agree with a word
of it, mind you (except maybe that they don't make books like Pynchon's
much anymore, and I don't think taht was the reviewer's point). As I've
mentioned a few times (sorry), I'm nearing completion of V., and seeing
M&D review from this perspective, it seems to me that the Slate reviewer
completely misses the point that yes, people like to "get" Pynchon,
uncover the mysteries, etc., but some people actually read him for the
emotional ride his novels bring! When I fnished CoL 49, I was
broken-hearted, anxious, dare I say paranoid? In other words, I was
sharing Oedipa's emotional state-- and that's all I ask of a fiction
writer: Make me *feel*. I enjoy literary fun and games as much as anyone,
but I read fiction--I read Pynchon--in order to glean an emotional
experience. V. is weighing me down (happily) with the tragedy of history.
What will M&D give me? I can hardly wait to find out.
