I am not a genius; I am a gifted imbecile. Also, sometimes one of these
jerks enables me to make a point I've been thinking about for a while.

Maybe I accidentally deleted it and forgot. The multiple message thing got
me zapping files reflexively.

Nah. I could care less about the flames in an emotional sense. I just don't
want this junk to get repeated in the media. At least my answer is there.
These things have a way of taking on a life of their own and from a PR
standpoint it's merely good professional practice to issue an answer in the
same medium in which the attack appeared.

Some PR people disagree about this, but this is my policy and I learned it
from absolute masters of the field. Sometimes people on pynchon-l are making
false statements about factual matters and I just want to make sure the
correction is in the archive, as well as informing others who might somehow
otherwise repeat it. There are lots of writers on the list. Stuff about me
winds up in the Pynchon industry books and writings all the time.

Also, if some one does libel me here, and the libel is repeated by Time, Inc
(or whomever) I've established the basis for a finding of malice and/or
negligence by putting my answer in the record. No one on pynchon-l is worth
suing, but some big outlet would get stuck with a stiff award on one of these.
