Cinco de mayo is not Mexican independence day nor does it celebrate the
winning of the revolution with Spain. It honors a particular battle by a
particular figure credited with stirring the fight for independence which
came several years later. It is not celebrated in Mexico except for in
Puebla where this guy comes from (I forget his name) and has in fact
become an excuse for marketing in the U.S. as well as a holiday celebrated
privately by Mexicans in California. Mexican independence day is in
September. (Take all above facts with a grain of salt, shot of tequila,
and squirt of lemon).
If I were home in CA I would be drinking Cuervo and Coronas with my pals
but instead I am stuck here in north Texas with all these fucking white
people.
Dee-Ahna (as my Mexican friends pronounce it)
