Saturday's Daily Telegraph (May 3) contains a remarkably uninspired and vague
little memoir about Pynchon at Cornell, written by one Lorana Sullivan, who
claims to have sat next to Pynchon in Baxter Hathaway's creative writing
seminars. Nearly all of it could have been appropriated from other sources.
The only even remotely original content is this description of the post-Navy
Pynchon: "By the time he returned to Cornell, he was a shade under 6 ft with
a slim, wiry build. His face was thin, elongated by a neatly trimmed beard.
His hair was black. This made him appear somewhat sinister, even satanic - if
you missed the twinkle in his eye."
Ever hear of Ms. Sullivan, Jules?
