first editions

Let us not forget, while we're on the subject of first editions, that what a
book dealer might offer you for your first is also going to be, by
neccessity, less than the amount for which s/he will try to turn around and
sell it. Of course, it's probably more of a a buyer's than a seller's
market around here.

Being the bibliophile on a budget that I am (my motto is, "it's better to
have a book and not need it than to need a book and not have it"), I keep
hoping to encounter a Pynchon first at book or garage sales. No luck so
far, but Rome wasn't built in an ootsie.

Speaking of--my local book dealer just received a signed advance copy
(paperback) of "Mao II" which he has priced at $40. Anyone know if this is
a decent deal?
