Spoiler

I'm hearing echos of GR all through this, but the sensation became
especially strong during Mason's time on the windy side of St. Helena.
Contact with the dead, and the questions of how a man of science is to
deal with thoughts of the afterlife abound. Especially noteworthy
is Mason's fantasy about a reward from Lord Clive for staying with
Maskelyne. Rather like Pointsman's fantasy about what it would be like
to get the Nobel. It's interesting that Pynchon, who has recieved - and,
on occasion, rejected - high honers, has his characters dreaming of
the same....
