Doesn't this idea actually get explicitly stated somewhere in GR?  Wish I could remember 
where, but I seem to recall that it was enlightening to realize that real thought is a pain in 
the neck and that what we mostly do is just hum along on auto-pilot most of the time. 
(including, unfortunately, most of the time we post.  Mea maxima culpa)
