In all fairness to Mr. Lane, he does devote three pages to his review and is 
well-acquainted with Pynchon's past work (successes and failures). This is a 
ringing endorsement when you compare it to the DETAILS we're-hip-we-have-M&D 
line listing, which is rather feeble praise. Funny to think that both mags are 
owned by the same media empire.

Subject: New Yorker Review

Anthony Lane reviews M&D in the latest New Yorker and is mostly favorable
except for some questionable misreading of the the title and claiming a
general softening of TRP's focus and ideas.  Haven't finished the book, but
it appears a bit off-center.
