I'll have to pay attention, but could it be that the Reverend is not
offended by profanity, just blasphemy?

A-and here's the Trick Question of the Day: Who frames the reverend's 
narration, and is the stuff that isn't actually in quotes to be taken
as literal narration by the cleric or an evocation of what he is actually
saying in his story?  (Rather like the film flashbacks in CITIZEN KANE
that give us words and images that could not have been directly witnessed
by the "narrators" themselves)
