I never understood what a pachinko parlor was until I watched Wim Wenders'
movie _Until the End of the World_. It's sort of a-- well, I call it a
"global road movie"...these characters hop around between continents, one
group chasing another for some scientific device. But the journey is as
interesting as the destination. Anyhow, at one point they're in Japan, and
there are sequences filmed in a pachinko parlor. It's a game room of sorts
filled with these sort of vertical pinball machines, constantly clattering
and ringing bells. I don't know how the game works,-- I gather a ball or
balls drop down and follow(s) some course or other, determining whether you
win. Don't know if you have any control over it, or if it's total luck. I
think pachinko is often gambled upon.

The aforementioned movie also has some scenes of those weird Japanese
"coffin" motels--where traveling businessmen stay on the cheap in little
cubbyholes stacked atop one another.
