Anyone whose contribution appears in Lineland is receiving a free copy.
Anyone else can consult the Pynchon-l Archive for the unedited material,
including my original remarks, which were given freely and without thought
of gain. My reward for this was a disgusting wave of gratuitous vitriol.
This invective gave me the idea for a book about an Internet mailing list.
When its publication was announced I was subjected to yet another barrage of
vile filth, much of it from people who were not in the book and had not been
on the list when the exchanges took place.
When at the request of many pynchon-l subscribers, I did put my Pynchon
memoir online, I included a note saying that anyone who enjoyed reading it
and wished to show his or her appreciation could send me a new or used book.
I was then ridiculed for begging. Although the person who did this later
very generously apologized, the attack was repeated here in the latest exchange.
I'm not some sort of public service institution. I earn my living by writing
and publishing. Yet now I'm being attacked as a wannabe writer, a parasite
and a fraud by an obscure librarian named Peter Giordano, whose only
publication credit (if you call it that) is evidently what he is writing
here about me. Do you think any of this motivates me very much to share more
of my work gratis?
