Perhaps -- one can admit, for instance, the prescience of Vidal's
complaint that the "rattle and buzz of television" contaminates Pynchon's
prose.  (I quote from memory, by the way -- Vidal doubtless phrased his
criticism more felicitiously.)  VINELAND rattled and buzzed with a
vengeance, and I cannot yet decide if the noise CONTAMINATED or ENRICHED
its style. 

Speaking of hockey, did you (Kenneth) know that Don DeLillo wrote a
pseudonymous novel about a women's hockey team?
