After having to do ligatures manually for one of our recent titles (the
software we usually use for books does them automatically), I've noticed that
a) it's a damn pain to do, even with sophisticated search and replace, b)
once you've done it, things like spellcheck stop working, and exporting text
to HTML or whatever doesn't work, and c) none of the other books I've read
recently have had ligatures either. I suspect 'c' is because of the move
to newer technologies to typeset books, but those technologies have
problem 'a'. Hopefully the more common software will soon learn to
automatically use ligatures when available.
