Spoiler follows:
About Jenkin's Ear: Does anyone know the "real" history of that Historickal
Item? The stuff about Jenkins keeping it and travelling eventually to
St. Helena at least seems plausible. Even the thought of its being lost
on a wager and put on exhibit is not unlikely. But certainly the conditions
of its display seem to enter the realm of "pure" fiction.
A couple of rapid disclaimers: We all know that the work of TRP (BTW, sorry
if the initials annoy, but IMHO they serve a useful function if not overdone)
is often strangest when dealing with the implausible but real and less so
when offering apparently realistic fantasies.
