The cover of my 1st edition 3rd printing hardcover of V. has "V" (no
period, I believe) embossed all over it in a variety of typefaces.  The
dustcover has a large white V. on a ruled gold ground with a sky shading
from blue to purple and A NOVEL BY THOMAS PYNCHON at the bottom. The back
of the dustcover is white, lists all of the chapter titles, and has a
blurb from _Time_.
