Decontructing Who Thomas Pynchon Is

In an old article published in a national magazine an author wrote:

"One day we went for a walk .... " (The author then goes on to
discuss a tender moment with his or her former paramour)

But in the same person's web version of the same article the author
says about this tender moment:

"Note: This is a complete lie."

Now, my question is: If an author tells one self-described lie in a
national magazine isn't it sensible to question the veracity of other
comments in the same article?

P.S. I used a private email account and a a personal machine to send
this message so anybody who sends a message to my employer is a bigger
jerk than I thought. Anybody who want's to sue me, personally, for libel
is welcome to try but I look upon the above a legitimate and reasonable
question
