In "The Writer Is Dead. But His Ghost Is Thriving." (NYT Magazine, pp.
38-41), Jack Hitt (at least that's who gets the credit) writes:
***
In this atmosphere, everyone's a ghostwriter, striving to pick topics or
find strategies that will elevate the author to the ranks of the scandalous
and the freakish, based more on what they've done than on what they've
written.
The few writers who continuously shun this game--Salinger and Pynchon, for
exmaple--were once seen as beautiful romantics holding on to some fading
vision of the writer as writer. Now they are seen both in the industry and
out as sour cranks who just don't get it.

A-and in the City section, there's a follow-up to the ckaratnytsky article
that appeared some weeks ago. Looks like she and her co-worker (and their
union, and Times coverage, and pressure from patrons) succeeded in getting
New York Public Library administrators to reverse a ridiculous decision
they'd made. Unless my eyes deceive me, the article comes complete with a
recycled photograph, in the best Pynchon tradition. It's a heartwarming
tale (though it could've used a ghost speller).
