FUP and M&D (Duck spoilers only)

Was anyone reminded of Jim Dodge's little novel titled _FUP_ when reading
M&D?  The mechanical duck story kept reminding me of Fup.  The mech-duck's
larger-than-duck-life characteristics formed the link in my mind, I guess.
Just for the record, I am aware of the TRP-and-Jim-Dodge-are-the-same-person
red herring that was floated in a San Francisco Chronicle article back when
Vineland first appeared.  My purpose in bringing this up is not to revive
that little bit of silliness.  But I wondered if in TRP's mind there may
have been some linkage between the mech-duck and Fup.    -j minnich
