If Hanna Reitsch is already covered in the Pyncon-l archives, just
tell me where to go <grin>, but I read in Isaac Asimov's Book of
Facts (so it must be true <smirk>):
"Daredevil pilot Hanna Reitsch was the first woman to test a rocket
plane, the Messerschmitt Me163, and may be the only person to have
'traveled' for in-flight observation in a test model of the V1-V2
rockets. Testing what was the latest vehicle, she inevitably crashed
many times (as she did in that Me163); it was said with some
exaggeration that there was not a single bone in her body that hadn't
been broken at least once. Hanna Reitsch appears in history books as
the lone pilot who -- in the final days of the siege of Berlin --
flew into the Nazi capital to rescue Adolf Hitler at the very last
moment. (Hitler insisted on staying behind, and killed himself in his
bunker.)"
Whatta woman!
