erratum

I earlier wrote that Pynchon didn't include an episode from the
Journal in M&D.  But he does.  On pg. 408 he quotes it directly
and even includes the time Mason spent recovering from the
injuries to his hip.  He slightly mis-quotes it though, leaving
out the fact that whip as well as hat and whig flew in different
directions when Mason went ass over elbows over the horse's head. No mention
of the horse having been spooked by Rebekah though.
(For further information:  all sorts of letters from Nevil the Royal
 Arstronomer are included in the journal, as well as encounters with
Indians hostile and friendly.)
