Don't forget that expressing this anti-clerical belief is Emerson, the
geomancer and astrologer, the adept who takes Dixon and his other students
flying, shows them the ley lines -- a practioner in a tradition that
pre-dates Christianity, a male witch?
Looking at the passsage again, it's not clear to me that Emerson is
discounting the possibility of direct experience of Christ as I said in my
post, he says "'tis not for us to presume to act as Christ alone may" which
indicates he recognizes some reality there.
