I started off right, then slipped into the mistake of attributing this
quote to Emerson in a later post, thanks for getting me back on track.

I don't know enough about Jesuits to know if there is "some standard
Society of Jesus justification for pitylessness", but Dixon's comment does
imply that he understand Fr. Maire to be discounting pity; I don't think
that excludes interpreting Fr. Maire's comment as I originally did, as
expressing the belief that trying to imitate "Christ's true Pity" makes us
look as foolish as "Dogs who cannot quite catch the Trick of it."
