the British position on slavery

Thanks to Nicole for clarifying the status of slaves in Britain c. 1763. 
Can anyone else add to the discussion, I wonder?

I've glanced over Equiano's narrative and noticed that there's a Mr. Dixon
in it--though I strongly doubt he's "our" Mr. Dixon.  I was very intrigued
to find a Mr. David Ruggles of New York in the narrative of Frederick
Douglass.  Ruggles was a major player in helping fugitive slaves in the
early 1800s.

These narratives are truly compelling.  They're well worth a look.  I
haven't seen any from South Africa, but I'm pretty sure they're out there.
