M&D/R&G

As I chain my way through M&D, I'm struck more and more often by the
resemblance between M&D and Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
Both pairs are on assignments from the king, but neither can quite
fathom the ultimate reasons. Both pairs are aware of but unable to
comprehend greater forces lurking about them. Most of all, both pairs
are full of what I would call an amiable cluelessness which leaves them
receptive to marvels and wonders on a sort of "ho-hum, a giant glowing
indian" basis. Not a point to be belabored, but I was struck by the
resemblances.
