Nice work Steve, I seem to recall that A.L.Lloyd goes into the history of
the keelmen and their importance to the emergence of an English
working-class consciousness in his history of English folk music (titled, I
think, "English Folk Music") -- but it's a long time since I read it and
it's unlikely to be in the local library. 

Still, might be worth checking,
