I thought someone had posted a (brief) reply to this, but my two
penn'orth would be that the length of the calendar year was still the
subject of much (church-fuelled) debate at the time of M&D.  After all,
the Roman Catholic church has only just got round to admitting that
Galileo was right after all.  Shock ! Horror !  We're not the centre of
the known universe after all.

I don't think it was all that long before M&D's time that the calendar
was officially changed and the public demanded the return of their
missing days.
