Rushdie was poking fun at Pynchon, gently but unmistakably.  Remember the
lines where Rushdie says something to the effect that it's one thing to live
in hiding by choice and quite another to have it imposed on you.  "Give it
up," Rushdie to Pynchon in the same review.
