Us vs Them

So maybe what we have here is early skirmishes at the front lines of a
coming Armageddon--the Academy vs. the Regular Folks, duking it out, to
either come to an Understanding of sorts or to engage in Total War, Take
no Prisoners--it's up to us.

Puts me in mind of one of my favorite cartoons by the late lamented B.
Kliban: three puny professorial types huddling to discuss theory while a
big muscular but small-headed working stiff sits at the table ready to
arm-wrestle with his buddies looking on.

reminds moi of that scene in The Recognitions--the oh so clever academic
swill that passes for enlightenment at some art happening, profiling that
sweaty blue collar t-shirt. I know which side of the fence I sit on, but
I have met some academics who weren't head cases (hehe).
I was on the Joyce list for a while--some real head cases there. maybe
that's why Pynch is relevant for schmo's like me and someone like
Lawrence isn't (IMHO--sorry Chris)--his works smell of the street and he
likes Count Chocula
