Andrew writes: (in a most enjoyable meditation on M&D (or a small part of it) as
autobiography)

That sounds to me like Pynchon riddling us. Does the old dog actually have
a soul. Is there a person behind that name, whose existence is of relevance
to our reading of this book? Or should we judge the dog by his repertoire
of tricks?

Or should we simply judge the tricks and leave the dog out of it? No, Andrew
is right. It's fun to speculate. LTD and P are part of the tricks.

Couldn't help hearing 'judge the dog by the repertoire of his tricks' as redolent
of the ancient debate over strong AI. But of course there is never any doubt that
the intelligence of M&D is of the highest order--regardless of what's behind
the curtain.
