In a decaying industrial block in Haverhill, there is a knife
sharpening service called 'The Razor's Edge', where I take the home
cutlery. The proprietor's son stands behind the counter which is
adorned with military memorabelia stretching from the war of
independence to Vietnam.
One day I'm waiting and examining a small glass display containing
iron crosses, daggers, and several faded polaroids. There is one of a
couple of special forces guys with a small index card attached. On
it is a hand written account of the capture and execution of Che,
sworn to by a SF officer, who was at the scene. It differs radically
from what has (until relatively recently) been the accepted version
of events.
Che was captured alive by a native contingent (bolivians?) supported
by US advisors. He was held in a shack in some remote village while
the debate raged as to what to do with him. The decision was made to
execute Che on the spot. The ranking officer took Che into a room,
explained what would happen, and accepted Che's offer of his pipe as
some wierd war tribute, just before capping the guy.
One creepy ass encounter with real history.
love,
cfa
