Its campus is perched on a cliff, and thus might also be modeled on the UC
Santa Cruz campus, which sits on top of a hill overlooking the ocean, and
certainly had the appropriate counterculture ambience. As far as that goes,
the UC Berkeley campus has Bay and Pacific Ocean views.  But the whole
locale is made up -- no Trasero County as Peter points out, Pynchon's
carved out and created some highly evocative, mythical landscape in
Southern California, just as he's done with Vineland County up north.
