A little more context, slightly after the topic's passed.

And there were two replies, from David . . . > The last I heard, Pepperdine,

Maybe Kathleen has a little closer view. Administratively they're affiliated
with the Churches of Christ, which as David points out has given us Judge
Starr. We can add to that religious affiliation Pat Boone and Anita Bryant.
The Scaife money adds a further pleasing conspiratorial touch.
While Bob Jones U. has some ideological similarities to the C of C folks,
it's generally fundamentalist but not linked officially to a church--they seem
to want to appeal to several sorts. (Does anyone know where Rev. Bob
Jones hangs his hat?)
Pepperdine is thought of as "liberal" by the C of C, perhaps because of
contagion from the rest of California. Despite that, I'd find the awareness
of weed and Weed, and the readiness to call out the police for some
head-breaking, a little over the line. Especially at that time, they'd be more
_in loco parentis_ in handling the outbreak of mopery.
Personally I'd go with a combination -- Pepperdine for locale, but perhaps
a private college (Occidental?) or smaller state U. for atmosphere.
