At 11:15 AM -0500 12/5/98, Peter Petto referred to Brock's insight of the
60s generation youth "need only to stay children forever, safe inside some
>>extended national Family" and asked how do we grow up? (Is this question
>>answered in VL? in M&D?):
We only get pointers towards an answer in VL -- by the end, Frenesi may
have the potential to re-connect with her family and take responsibility
for her actions and begin to "grow up", but the real answer comes in M&D, I
think. There, Charles Mason's arc takes him far away then finally back to
home, wife, children -- the point where we see Frenesi at the end of VL,
she's finally back with Prairie after her long absence; in M&D we see
Charles Mason grow older, have the grace to take advantage an opportunity
to reconcile himself to his son, the slip away into madness and die. We
also see Jeremiah Dixon grow mellow and old, surrounded by beautiful women,
an angler to the end.
I'm still reliving the earthquake that jolted us out of bed at 4:16
yesterday morning, epicenter more or less here on our block -- only 4.1,
but enough to fracture my slumbering equanimity and send me staggering
half-way out the door before I fully realized what was happening.
